16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass college taking pictures that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive Faculty, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department mentioned in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine materials and threatening to commit against the law which can lead to death or nice bodily injury.

Police said they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found components to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital items that could be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School safety stays a excessive priority for the department," police said in a statement. 

Details on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police mentioned this case remains underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the school's neighborhood that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing danger to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our standard follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we had been assured that this individual did not pose a right away risk to the Berkeley High School neighborhood."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the scholar.
