Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech big stated its iconic music player has been changed by other gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said: "At present, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've built-in an unbelievable music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with help for spatial audio - there isn't any higher way to enjoy, uncover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that would maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new category of digital music player that allows you to put your whole music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he mentioned at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the identical again."

Related MP3 gamers launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has released five versions of its music participant - the Classic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent times, with cell phone technology enabling prospects to hearken to music companies on their phones.
