The coverage, disclosed in leaked emails Musk despatched to Tesla's government staff Tuesday, was first reported by electrical vehicle information web site Electrek.

"Anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the workplace for a minimal (and I imply *minimal*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. That is less than we ask of manufacturing facility staff," Musk wrote, adding that the workplace have to be the worker's primary office the place the other workers they commonly interact with are based — "not a remote branch workplace unrelated to the job duties."

Musk said he would personally evaluate any request for exemption from the coverage, but that for probably the most part, "In the event you don't present up, we are going to assume you will have resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) did not reply to a request for comment on the coverage change, however Musk appeared to substantiate it in a tweet of his own early Wednesday when asked on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any further comment to people who think coming into work is an antiquated idea?" Musk replied: "They need to pretend to work some place else."The coverage is totally at odds with that of the other tech company Musk is trying to purchase, Twitter (TWTR), which has previously announced workers can continue to work from home "perpetually" if they like. "Wherever you feel most efficient and inventive is where you will work and that features working from dwelling full-time endlessly," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a notice to Twitter's almost 100,000 staff in March, just before Musk's interest in proudly owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, however, that will not be the case. It is particularly necessary that senior managers be seen within the workplace, Musk said, including that was one of the reasons he primarily lived on the Tesla factory in Fremont, California, when the corporate was struggling to extend manufacturing in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not completed that, Tesla would way back have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are of course companies that do not require this, but when was the final time they shipped a fantastic new product? It has been a while."

He added, "Tesla has and can create and actually manufacture probably the most exciting and meaningful merchandise of any firm on Earth," he added. "This won't occur by phoning it in."

Surveys present the vast majority of office workers prefer the choice to earn a living from home. Since reopening places of work following Covid-19 shutdowns, many firms beyond Twitter have announced increased flexibility for employees who need to work remotely, partly as a method to retain or attract expertise in a very tight labor market. But the world's richest particular person does not seem involved about that dynamic.
