Nashville Public Library launches ‘Freedom to Read’ campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It's a subject that is taken hold in Tennessee: books like "Maus" or "Stroll Two Moons" have been pulled from shelves.

Whereas those books might be banned from some schools, there's still some other place you will discover them.

"Our job is just to ensure that if you'd like it, it is right here for you," stated Public Info Officer for the Nashville Public Library, Ed Brown.

"'Maus' is all checked out right now," stated Brown. "So we obtained extra copies on order but as soon as phrase got around about what happened in McMinn County, we received quite a lot of holds."

Those are just among the two million different materials at the Nashville Public Library.

"A lot of people don't need to learn these books; they do not want their youngsters to should learn these books, or compelled to learn these books, and that's superb," stated Brown. "However there are a lot people who do, and we wish to be there for the people who do want to learn these supplies."

And if you wish to make your love for these materials recognized, what higher method than with your library card? The 5,000 restricted version playing cards for the marketing campaign say "I read banned books."

"All of us watch the TV shows that we like; we all watch the different sports activities or root for the totally different groups we're part of," mentioned Brown. "Books are no totally different."

The purpose is to get the 5,000 library playing cards within the arms of recent sign-ups this month.

"We aren't making an attempt to be a push back — a power pushing again against these decisions — we need to be a substitute for say, for those who could not have the ability to get it there... you may get it here," stated Brown.

The restricted edition library cards can be found as long as supplies final.
