Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech giant said its iconic music participant has been changed by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, stated: "Right now, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have built-in an unimaginable music expertise throughout all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio - there is not any higher option to enjoy, discover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that might maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new class of digital music player that allows you to put your entire music assortment in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the identical again."

Similar MP3 gamers released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success as the iPod.

Apple has launched five variations of its music player - the Traditional, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod range lately, with mobile phone technology enabling clients to hearken to music companies on their telephones.
