A California district attorney declined to file fees Tuesday against former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson after he was recorded on video in a bodily altercation with one other passenger on a JetBlue flight.
San Mateo County District Legal professional Steve Wagstaffe made the decision after having reviewed police stories and videos of the April 20 incident. Each the passenger, who has not been recognized, and Tyson requested that no fees be filed.
"Yesterday afternoon the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office concluded its assessment of the case involving Mike Tyson on the San Francisco Airport on April 20, 2022 and the allegation that he committed a misdemeanor battery towards one other passenger on an airplane whereas waiting at the terminal previous to departure," Wagstaffe said in a press release.
"Our determination is that we will not file any charges towards Mr. Tyson based on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. These embody the conduct of the victim leading up to the incident, the interplay between Mr. Tyson and the victim, as well as the requests of both the victim and Mr. Tyson that no prices be filed on this case," Wagstaffe stated.
The case is now closed.
Cellphone video showed Tyson, 55, showing to attempt to punch somebody who was pushing him away. Representatives for Tyson said the particular person was harassing Tyson. The video did not show what occurred before the altercation.
David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Martin Sabelli, attorneys for Tyson, responded to the decision to not file costs by thanking Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County sheriff and law enforcement agencies "for his or her careful, diligent, and professional work."
