Last NYC public payphone eliminated

New York City's final bank of public payphones was faraway from a street corner in Midtown.

NEW YORK - The ultimate New York City public pay telephone was eliminated on Monday morning. 

The bank of two phones was on 7th Avenue and 50th Road in Midtown Manhattan. And, as you might anticipate in Manhattan, graffiti was scrawled on it. 

The city started removing payphones in 2015 and changing them with public Wi-Fi hotspots.

The elimination marks the top of the payphone era in the city except for some non-public payphones on public property and four everlasting full-length so-called Superman booths.

LinkNYC, which runs the Wi-Fi hotspots, says the community can be expanded so as to add 5G functionality this summer season.

In addition to free Wi-Fi, LinksNYC provides entry to a social companies listing, system charging, free phone calls inside the U.S., and transit and climate alerts.
