16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful system supplies and threatening to commit against the law which can end in loss of life or nice bodily injury.

Police said they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic gadgets that could be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College safety stays a high priority for the division," police stated in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police said this case remains underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the varsity's group that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing risk to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our customary practice, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we had been assured that this particular person did not pose an immediate threat to the Berkeley High College community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion against the coed.
